In the Autumn semester of 2024, the ‘Intercultural Exchange’ series of activities, jointly initiated by the Faculty of International Media (ICUC) and Nottingham Trent University (NTU), has  continued in order to build a platform for Chinese and international  students to exchange and learn, to promote cultural understanding and tolerance, and to strengthen students' intercultural communication skills. This semester, every Friday afternoon the series of intercultural exchange activities has been  held in the ICUC ‘The Global Lounge’.

The first session was held on 25 October, 2024. Stella Bunnag, an  international  lecturer from NTU , outlined the overall plan and arrangement of this semester's series of activities to both Chinese and international  students, focusing on the importance of intercultural communication skills. Stella analyzed and introduced strategies for intercultural communication skills and how to highlight and express the value of intercultural experiences in a job application CV.

The second session was held on 8 November, focusing on ‘Cross-Cultural Similarities and Differences’, and was presented by Juliet Ebele Nwekeorji (Chinese name: 李思然), a current PhD student at the university. Based on the theory of the ‘cultural iceberg’, Juliet discussed the similarities and differences between different cultures, and explained in detail the obvious and deep-seated invisible characteristics of cultures. Chinese and international  students had a group discussion on the cultural conflicts that may lead to culture shock in daily life, and enhanced their knowledge and understanding of multiculturalism by comparing the customs and behaviors of people with different cultural backgrounds.

The third session was held on 15 November, and focused on the theme of ‘Heritage and Cultural Diversity’. Stella Bunnag, the international  lecturer from NTU , asked the Chinese and international  students to think about their cultural heritage by drawing a family tree. Through sharing their family stories, the students explored and reflected on the roots and evolution of their respective cultures, so as to further understand and respect the diversity and uniqueness of different cultures.

The first three phases of the programme have been successfully delivered with the active participation of Chinese and international students. Through these activities, students can make friends with people from different countries and regions, and through cross-cultural integration and interaction, students can not only broaden their horizons and enhance their comprehensive personal qualities, but also help to build a more harmonious and diversified campus environment.

This semester, the Intercultural Communication Series will be held six sessions, each session focusing on a different theme and activities. In the last session, we will have a competition in which Chinese and foreign students will form teams and present ideas on the theme of ‘Intercultural Communication’, which will further enhance the participatory and interesting nature of the activities.
