In the 2025 autumn semester, the "Intercultural Exchange Programme," hosted by the Faculty of International Media, was successfully launched to build a dynamic platform for Chinese and international students, promote cultural understanding and inclusiveness, and enhance cross-cultural communication skills. The series of sessions began on October 29 and have been held every Wednesday from 16:00 to 18:00 in the college’s global lounge. So far, three engaging sessions have been successfully organized.

Session 1: Embracing Differences – Understanding Culture Shock

In the first session, guided by British instructor Bryan Allen, students engaged in lively discussions around the theme of "culture shock." International students shared their novel experiences and initial impressions upon arriving in China, while Chinese students offered warm and practical advice. Individual groups exchanged perspectives on their respective "cultural presumptions," fostering mutual understanding in a relaxed atmosphere while learning to approach cultural differences with an open mind.

Session 2: The Many Faces of Family – Exploring Cultural Concepts of Home

Hosted by French instructor Melvin, the second session delved into the topic of "family." Students shared how love is expressed—whether directly or implicitly—within their own cultural contexts. Through vivid storytelling, participants recognized both the universality of human emotions and the diverse ways they are conveyed across different cultural backgrounds.

Session 3: A Journey of Taste – Sharing Food Cultures Together

In the third session, led by Malaysian instructor Keong, food served as a flavorful bridge connecting everyone. While tasting the popular Chinese cold dish:Tofu Skin and Celery Salad, students exchanged stories about their own culinary traditions. This sensory experience brought participants closer, making discussions on culture tangible and engaging, and creating a warm and lively atmosphere.

         Reflection and Outlook

The first three sessions have not only helped international students adapt to life in China but also provided Chinese students with valuable opportunities to practice expressing themselves in an intercultural setting. The programme has successfully established a communicative space where students broaden their horizons and build meaningful friendships through sincere dialogue.

The Intercultural Exchange Programme continues! We welcome more students to join us in the upcoming sessions to further explore the richness of diverse cultures together.
